Women’s World Cup 2023: The women who hold the weight of the PK spot (light) for their nations
In an attempt to flood google searches for the rest of time with the women’s side of the beautiful game: the players names, nations, clubs, and tournaments, the biggest one at that - The World Cup. Here is All Things Penalty Kicks (PKs) at the AUNZ World Cup 2023
Just over 6 months ago, the Qatar Men’s World Cup occurred in 2022. As I went to create a bracket-style PK Taker poll on my businesses’ Instagram (The PK Spot), I was able to gather all the information I needed. In a simple google search of “World Cup Men’s Penalty Takers,” I was able to find all the big names, even the PK Takers’ name’s of the nations who would be participating in their first tournament. 6 months later, I went to create the same bracket-style PK Taker poll to gear up for the Women’s World Cup; however, there was nothing. Google gave me information on male PK takers, or information from the 2015 Women’s tournament (not even about penalty takers). None of it useful. When asking someone who works in media, they did not even know who the Lionesses PK Taker was, one of the biggest teams in the women’s game. I was baffled that this information was not easily accessible considering it took me 2 minutes to gather everything I needed for the men’s game. They say the “Women’s game is growing” and that is true, but not quick enough from a information gathering perspective, or a respect to the women who step up in a pressure-filled moment to stand on that PK spot, and look dead in the eyes of the opposing keeper.
